The iris is the thin layer of various connective tissues and muscles fibers. It is the colored looking part of the eye. The iris controls the amount of light that enters the eye. Inside of the iris is the pupil. The pupil can expand and shrink in changing light. Despite the common belief, the actual change in color of the iris rarely happens. While the color of the eye may appear to change this change is typically due to light changes.
